SELF-AWARENESS
Basic Human Values
According to the study by psychologist Shalom Schwartz
Values are the meaning we choose to give to our lives.
-Jean-Paul Sartre-
Shalom H. Schwartz is a psychologist renowned in the field for developing a theory of personal values: the Theory of Basic Human Values.
This theory presents the core values that can be found in most cultures.
It identifies ten basic values and explains the relationships between them (compatibilities or oppositions).
Indeed, some values can be in opposition to others (for example, benevolence opposes power) while others are compatible (for example, conformity and security).
To discover what lies behind this theory of values, you can also listen to episode 84 – The Theory of Values According to Shalom Schwartz.
What is a value?
A value is a personal conviction that we consider important. It is an essential reference point that we use to make choices and guide our daily actions.
What you need to remember is that a value is a positive belief that we hold within ourselves.
The 10 basic human values
Shalom Schwartz defines each of the ten basic values by the overall goal they express, specifies the universal need(s) from which they arise, and lists the values that refer to them.
- Autonomy: Independence of thought and action – choosing, creating, exploring.
- Security: Safety, harmony, and stability of society, relationships between groups and individuals, and oneself. Some values of this type serve individual interests (being healthy) or collective interests (national security).
- Benevolence: Preservation and enhancement of the well-being of people with whom one frequently interacts.
- Hedonism: Pleasure or personal gratification.
- Tradition: Respect, commitment, and acceptance of customs and ideas supported by one’s culture or religion.
- Achievement: Personal success obtained through the demonstration of socially recognized skills.
- Power: A prestigious social status, control over resources, and domination over people.
- Stimulation: Enthusiasm, novelty, and challenges in life.
- Universalism: Understanding, appreciation, tolerance, and protection of the well-being of all and nature.
- Conformity: Moderation of actions, tastes, preferences, and impulses that may destabilize or harm others, or transgress social expectations or norms.
What is the relationship between these values?
The values that are most important to us are interconnected: when we act in accordance with one value, it has consequences on other important values. And some of these values can even conflict with each other. In this case, we speak of a value conflict with oneself.
For example: values that are more oriented towards personal quests (success/freedom) tend to oppose values that are more oriented towards the collective or well-being.
To represent these interdependencies, Shalom Schwartz proposes to represent these values in the form of a circle.
The closer the values are in the circle, the more they share common and compatible motivations. The further apart they are, the more these values can conflict (they are antagonistic).
The first axis corresponds to the opposition between openness to change (independence of action, thought, and sensations; seeking new experiences) and continuity (self-restriction, order, and resistance to change). The second axis opposes self-transcendence (well-being and interest of others and nature) to self-enhancement (own interest even if it can have negative repercussions on others).
