If I had to use an image to represent life, I think I’d use the image of a road with many forks and milestones that we cross every day.
Regularly, we find ourselves either facing crossroads on this road or facing a signpost.
Faced with these situations, which life throws at us along this road, we have to make choices.
“Do I go right? Or left? Or maybe stay on the same road? “
Yep, we have to make a decision … and if possible the right one 🤔.
However, several criteria come into play when we have to make that famous decision, which is why our brains start to go into overdrive 🤯: we go into “thinking” mode ON.
Today, I’m offering you some keys to help you make better choices.
What does it mean to make a good decision?
Deciding is the most important thing we do in our lives. But it’s not just about making decisions. We want these choices to be the right ones for us, for our future to run smoothly.
At such times, we’re immersed in deep reflection to identify the best, if not the right choice.
But … what is a good decision?
Making a decision or a choice isn’t complicated in itself: all you have to do is choose A or B or C at a given moment. In reality, what’s difficult for our brains are the consequences of these choices, and that’s the real problem.
“Have I made the right choice? Did I make the right decision? What if I’m wrong?”
This state is due to a deep-seated belief we have about decisions, which I’m going to debunk today.
Know that there are no right decisions, or wrong decisions for that matter. 😳
That’s right, it’s a view of the mind. A judgement we make about our choices.
Let me explain…
We all have our own value system(if you don’t know yours, I invite you to read this article). We have principles associated with these values which are dear to us and which, as long as they are respected, give us satisfaction.
When you say to yourself “I made the right decision”, it really means that the decision you took was in line with your values. You are OK with the decision, there is no internal conflict. And that tells you that you’ve made the right decision.
And yet you weren’t sure of anything at the start…
But when a decision has negative repercussions on your life, if you take a closer look, I’m sure you’ll realise that in reality this choice went against one of your values, one of your principles. These decisions are not in line with your values, with who you really are.
Think about it. Aren’t these the decisions you call “bad decisions”? 🤔
Besides, that same decision that didn’t work for you, maybe it worked for someone else and that’s why you wanted to put it into practice for yourself.
But it didn’t work out the way you thought it would.
It’s not because that person is better than you, but it’s probably because they made a choice that suited their values and their personality.

I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about another belief we have about decision-making: it’ s always easy to say afterwards that it was a bad decision.
Yes, it’s easy to judge once the event is over.
But when you made that decision, you couldn’t have known whether the result you wanted would be the one you expected. You made your choice with the elements you had in your possession at the time.
So now you’re wondering how to make decisions that you won’t regret later?
In reality, I think that the real question to ask yourself is not really “how can I make good decisions? Rather, it’s “what can I do to broaden my field of knowledge so that I can make the decision that matches what I really want?”
You may already have an idea of the answer: your value system.
How do you make a decision using your value system?
To use your superpower – your values – you need to have identified them. And there’s nothing like introspection and personal analysis to do that.
Try to remember:
- What drives you on a daily basis?
- What makes you tick?
- What makes you get up in the morning with a smile on your face?
- What motivates you to get ahead in life?
The answer to these questions is your value system. Your value system is part of your identity.
